A Riot of Red Ribbon.
A
Riot of Red Ribbon is many things. It's a journey through many magical places
including Rollright Stones, Wyck Rissingto, Uffington White Horse, Avebury
and Stonehenge.
It's Dibby-Gran's determination to be her own person. It's the reversal
of relationships between the brilliant Parsley baby, Briar-Rose and the
not so clever Dibby.
It's a love story. Freya and Mary both fall in love with Churen Isaacs,
the night panther, and their close relationship is suddenly pressured.
Freya has one final problem. The attitudes of the gypsies she leads. There
is no easy resolution.
The Cross-over Time
The gnarled
finger slowly traced the outline of the distant granites, fringing them with
an esoteric blue light that shimmered uneasily as if waiting for an instruction,
a command between finger and stone.
Great-gran, the most patriarchal of Romany queens, had no intention of giving
up one jot of her power. Heaven, she'd learned, was what you made of it and
for Great-gran, heaven was the chance to meddle. It was the very thing she
did best.
I knew none of this when I found myself in the cross-over time, that moment
that is neither waking nor sleeping, living or dying, that transitory state
that seems so pleasant, and yet is the most dangerous of all.
I stood in the middle of Rollright stones. My stomach was twist-trembly tight,
for here, when the blue light dances, truths must be discovered, and rules
of place and time become a law unto themselves.
I backed to lean against the tallest stone pretending all this magic was of
no concern to me. I was doing the only thing I could, waiting, for once fire
light flickers kiss stone you may not leave.
